500+ no video after boot initiates
Good afternoon!
I just had a 500+ delivered today and decided to take it for a test drive. Currently I am able to see the boot splash however as soon as the device starts booting to the NVME my screen switches to power save mode as the HDMI signal has been lost. I have tried this on 5 different monitors, all with the same result (4x different types of Dell 1080 and 1 acer 720). Assuming there must be something wrong with the factory image I performed a net install only to arrive back at the same dilemma.
From there I pulled the NVME and popped it into a different machine multiple and began tweaking the /boot/config.txt settings.
#dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
...and one or two others related to auto-negotiating video settings or something to that effect. Each step was performed one step at a time resulting in me reconnect the NVME to the 500+, attempting to boot, then going back to mounting on a different machine to try another flag in the /boot/config.txt.
Needless to say nothing worked and I am still scratching my head. I searched through all the documentation I could find and browsed this forum but there really doesn't seem to be much in the way of useful information for the 500+ at this point.
Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a solution?

Re: 500+ no video after boot initiates
If you boot without the nvme or sdcard, or you press escape early in boot(*), you should see the boot diagnostic screen.
That should contain a line "display:" - can you report that line?
We're interested in the HPD and EDID values.
(*) you may need to be quick to catch the info before boot continues if using the escape key.

Re: 500+ no video after boot initiates
@dom,
It seems that regardless of what I connect it to I only get the following.
Display: DISP0: HPD=0, EDID=none #0 DISP1: HPD=0 EDID=none #0
Makes sense as to why I get a black screen after the boot splash, but I am not sure why it is unable to detect the display. If I connect one of many other Pi units at my disposal I do not have any issues leading me to believe it is a problem with the 500+ itself.

Re: 500+ no video after boot initiates
@rpiMike,
I have noticed that it is not the greatest connector but it is firmly seated in this case and the boot splash looks like what I would expect. It is worth noting that if you jiggle the cable a little bit while on the screen it will end up getting some vertical lines. Once pressed in firmly again they go away.
I tried on an HDMI TV a little bit ago and was unable to get anything to display, not even the boot splash.

Re: 500+ no video after boot initiates
@rpiMike,
It looks like the cable trim was indeed the issue. I went ahead and cut off about 1/4" of the plastic shielding to expose more of the micro HDMI connector and it did the trick.
Thank you very much for pointing that out, I honestly didn't think the cable would be an issue since it was a fresh from Canakit with the new unit.

Re: 500+ no video after boot initiates
I had the same problem and also experienced frustration. Then I thought I should swap out the HDMI cable I had been using. It was a micro->full HDMI adapter connected to an old HDMI cable. When I plugged in the official white Pi micro to full cable (no adapter) the monitor worked fine and I was able to see the first boot configuration menu.

I don't have a pi500 or pi500+ but looking at pictures the sockets on the 500+ look more recessed..

Re: 500+ no video after boot initiates
For others who run into this issue when they first start using a 500+. Here is a shot of regular micro HDMI cable and the one where I cut back the shielding a bit. As soon as I did that there was no longer any issue with booting properly.

Re: 500+ no video after boot initiates
Informative post, and I'll make sure to keep this in mind after I get my 500+.
Workhorse computer: Rpi 3b+
Workstation computer: Rpi500
Where's my sock? There it is.

There is a video from leepspvideo about fixing this problem by re-seating the motherboard:
