Bootable 64-bit Gentoo image for the RPi4 released (Xfce4 desktop)

This is a nice alternate to Raspbian, I've only dabbled with it, but very promising. 8-)

I tried this latest version on my new Pi4 4gb but encountered a problem with the wifi. It allowed me to connect to my wifi LAN but it won't connect to any internet site. I tried to ping other devices on my LAN but get no response. I changed the local in RPI config from UK to US but it didn't help.
edit: Wired works.

Given the facility to add a first-start script, has anyone yet written such a script to load/configure/start VNC in a manner that will allow connecting to a copy of RealVNC (on my iMac if it should matter; probably not) that is already serving Raspbian happily?
It seems like something that would be fairly widley useful.

Re: Bootable 64-bit Gentoo image for the RPi4 released (Xfce4 desktop)
This should not be too difficult to arrange (basic setup instructions for VNC are in the wiki here (alongside those for RDP, here)) - just a question of automating the initial steps in the /boot/startup.sh script. I'll have a look at this shortly, once the nspawn release is out of the way.timrowledge wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2019 1:06 amGiven the facility to add a first-start script, has anyone yet written such a script to load/configure/start VNC in a manner that will allow connecting to a copy of RealVNC (on my iMac if it should matter; probably not) that is already serving Raspbian happily?

Can you clarify if the image is a 64 bit kernel with a 64 bit userland or mixed ?mahjongg wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 6:38 pmMoved post to gentoo area, but split off your into here, and temporarily made it sticky.sakaki wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2019 9:50 amI normally avoid anything that sails close to cross-posting, but since there's been quite a bit of engagement - in various threads - on this General discussion forum recently regarding running the RPi4 in 64-bit mode (either kernel, or kernel+userland), and I'm not sure how many people here closely follow the goings on in the Operating system distributions -> Other -> Gentoo oubliette ^-^, I thought it'd be worth a quick, one-off announce post here for information's sake. I tried the latest version with the new Pi4 4gb phone and I'm having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi. I was allowed to connect to a WiFi LAN, but not to a website. I tried to ping another device on the LAN and it didn't work. I changed the location from the UK to the US to the RPI setting, but it didn't help.

I gave this most recent form a shot my new Pi4 4gb yet experienced an issue with the wifi. It permitted me to associate with my wifi LAN yet it won't interface with any web webpage.

30 Oct 2020: sadly, due to legal obligations arising from a recent change in my 'real world' job, I must announce I am standing down as maintainer of this project with immediate effect. For the meantime, I will leave the repo up (for historical interest, and since the images may be of use still in certain applications); however, there will be no further updates to the underlying binhost etc., nor will I be accepting / actioning further pull requests or bug reports from this point.
Email requests for support will also have to be politely declined, so, please treat this as an effective EOL notice.
For further details, please see my longer post here.
Gentoo itself on the aarch64 / 64-bit RPi platform remains very much a going concern of course; please see e.g. this forum for more details
Many thanks for your interest in this project!
With sincere apologies, sakaki ><
PS: mods, could you please unsticky this thread? Many thanks. S.

Re: Bootable 64-bit Gentoo image for the RPi4 released (Xfce4 desktop)
Dear Sakaki,
I have a six year old niece. Because of covid she has to do online classes. Her sister is 12 years old who does classes online too but needs a computer. There are many in India who cannot afford a tablet or laptop or desktop. I planned to make a computer for them but i have very little knowledge of Linux. Genpi64 worked fine with sd card. Thanks but i wanted to run it from usb 3 ssd. I tried but it did not work on raspberry pi4 8gb. Is there an image that would run from usb3.
It would be lot of help. I have been trying since november and could not keep my promise. Can you refer me to an image that will run of usb3
Thanks
Regards
Anurag

Re: Bootable 64-bit Gentoo image for the RPi4 released (Xfce4 desktop)
Hi Anurag,
as I am no longer able to support genpi64 (please see note here), I would recommend you set up the system with Raspbian instead.
If for some reason you do still want to use the genpi64 image however, then yes, it is possible to boot it from USB on a Pi4, you just need to have updated the firmware on your system first.
To do, so, begin by booting your target RPi4 using the v1.6.0 genpi64 image from microSD card, as usual. Then, as root or using sudo, edit the file /etc/default/rpi-eeprom-update, so it reads:
Save the file, and then reboot your RPi4. Once it comes back up, reboot it again. The EEPROM will now have been flashed.
You can then write the v1.6.0 genpi64 image to your target USB stick, and boot your RPi4 from that (be sure to remove any microSD card before trying to start up in this way). Make sure /etc/default/rpi-eeprom-update on the USB version is also updated as above (no need for the multiple reboots again of course, this is just to prevent reversion of the EEPROM).
But to reiterate, Raspbian would almost certainly be a safer bet!
hth,
sakaki

Thanks for the update and quick reply. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this thread. I was looking for the same issue.
