The SAMPA schwa

[edit ]

Dear Template Editors,

I would be much obliged if you could modify this module to automatically convert '@' into a schwa, obviating the need for using a modified keyboard layout or third-party website when expressing the most common English vowel.

Yours faithfully,

Seconded! {{IPAc-en }} already does this, so it's odd that this template doesn't. — W.andrea (talk) 21:29, 19 March 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

"Common practice is to put no punctuation except one space between the IPA and the respelling for clarity"

[edit ]

Really? I didn't know about this guideline until now and have made several edits in the past where I added a comma between the IPA and respelling for precisely the reason that I thought it looks much clearer when they are separated in some way. Of course, I will now pay attention to this guideline regarding my future edits and remove the commas when I see some. However, it really surprised me that this guideline specifically advises not to use any punctuation, and I'd be interested to know if I'm the only one who things it looks way more confusing, less structured, and in some cases even outright "awkward" when the IPA and respelling just follow each other without any form of separation. If many other users think like me, perhaps this guideline should be updated. Maxeto0910 (talk) 23:43, 21 December 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

A problem with the comma is that it's already used for separating transcriptions. So e.g. "/rt,rʊt/ , ROOT, RUUT" on first glance would look like it's presenting four different pronunciations. Nardog (talk) 13:42, 22 December 2024 (UTC) [reply ]

"Uppercase slightly smaller" NOT in text

[edit ]

It is (now?) not so – BUT inside a ref or {{efn }} it works[a] ,[1] , but not in-text: TESS-lə TESS-lə. What gives? Ponken (talk) 11:42, 27 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

It is smaller. {{respell|TESS|lə}} outputs:
<a href="/wiki/Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key" title="Help:Pronunciation respelling key"><i title="English pronunciation respelling"><span style="font-size:90%">TESS</span>-lə</i></a>
Nardog (talk) 12:57, 27 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Are we not seeing the same thing?
Ponken (talk) 07:59, 29 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
No, something must be overriding the font size on your end. Nardog (talk) 12:34, 29 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]
Thanks, I'll look into it. Ponken (talk) 14:12, 29 January 2025 (UTC) [reply ]

Notes

  1. ^ So from Tesla, Inc. it looks like TESS-lə TESS-lə.
