Using a different font - DejaVu Sans - has made it work at 300px, the width the file is used in articles. Unfortunately, it doesn't work at some other sizes. But at least it also works on this page.
Worked around rSVG bug where font-weight="normal" was being ignored. Forgot to mention that I've converted all path-text to real text, using the free font Liberation Sans to replace what appears to be Arial.
Cropped image and removed border. Quite a lot of tweaking to make the file small while keeping the underlying code easily readable. Possible rSVG bug--we'll see.
