@kevbon83 The calorie budget depends on what you set as your deficit goal for the day - 500, 1000, 1500 calories? If at the time you looked at the app and it showed 1123 calories consumed and 2798 cal expended, then you have a deficit of approximately 1700 cal. the app says you still have about 1200 cal to consume which would put your deficit at around 500 cal for the day (not counting whatever calories you have still to expend for the rest of the day). ... @rthomas268 I doubt that logging an activity as an exercise changes the calorie expenditure estimate. The algorithm still uses steps and HR to estimate the calories. Try this experiment for say 3 or 4 days. Manually log a walk as a walk the first day, then a run the second day, then an elliptical the third day. I have tried this and all three exercises will come to very similar calorie expenditure estimates. The logging is primarily for your own use for tracking. ... View more

@Sarah6294 Putting the setting dominant wrist will reduce its sensitivity to motion so that you don't get steps for your normal arm/hand motion such as picking up things or moving stuff around by hand or scratching your head. Some people also set their unit to dominant hand even when they wear the unit on their non-dominant hand if they find lots of spurious steps recorded to reduce said sensitivity to their arm motion. ... @Gujite The Charge 5 does not have a microphone. From the C5 manual (https://help.fitbit.com/manuals/manual_charge_5_en_US.pdf) Answer or reject phone calls If paired to an iPhone or Android phone, Charge 5 lets you accept or reject incoming phone calls. To accept a call, tap the green phone icon on your tracker's screen. Note that you can't speak into the tracker—accepting a phone call answers the call on your nearby phone. To reject a call, tap the red phone icon to send the caller to voicemail. The caller's name appears if that person is in your contacts list; otherwise you see a phone number. ... View more

@Ctrygirl The cal in/out (over/under) takes your target deficit and pro-rates it linearly over the course of the day. If you designate a 500 calorie deficit the app starts at 0 deficit at midnight, and looks for 250 calories at noon and then 500 calories at midnight. The app calculates the over/under number based on your calorie intake and expenditure AT THE TIME YOU LOOK AT IT. The number can shift quite a bit if you look before and after a meal or before and after a workout. The cal left to consume looks at your average expenditure for the rest of the day (based on your history) and then estimates how much more you will use up the rest of the day and then calculates how much more you can eat to be within your deficit. This number can shift if you change your pattern of expenditure - for example if you normally exercise in the evening and then don't do it one day. Suggest you be aware of what you will be doing that day and take all those numbers into consideration. ... View more

@Sbg6 Fitbit uses your stats (gender, age, height, weight) to estimate your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR) which is those calories you burn just to stay alive. Even if you don't wear the unit the algorithm continues to estimate your BMR. I don't know when you checked but 450 calories for 6-8 hours is not too far off (mine is about 60 calories per hour). The BMR estimate continues running even if you turn the unit off. At this time there is no way to disable that count. You can check the accuracy of the BMR by searching the web for a variety of BMR calculators. ... View more

@CarameliPod There are several reasons why someone's RHR might rise. 1. Normal day to day variation - mine goes through rising and falling within a range of 3 to 5 bpm. 2. Stress from an upcoming event - when I have to be out of town for a few days my RHR starts to rise a few days before the travel day and in some cases it rises about 5 points above the average (this happened when I had to take an overseas trip). 3. Physical changes - I find that my RHR starts rising about a week before I get sick with the flu or cold (that is, before I feel the symptoms of the flu). I watch mine carefully in the spring and fall just to catch these periods. Also, seasonal allergies to various pollen trigger my RHR to rise for a few days. Pregnancy can also drive one's RHR upward. If you find your RHR continue to rise with no apparent physical cause then it might be prudent to schedule a checkup just to make sure there is no underlying cause. ... View more
