Avner Greif is the Bowman Family Endowed Professor in Humanities and Sciences (Emeritus) at Stanford University, where he was also a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. Greif was a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Center for International Development and directed the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Economics (2014–2018). He was a Distinguished Professor at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics from 2015 to 2019. Greif specialises in the study of the social institutions that support economic development and their history. His scholarly contributions lie at the intersection of economics, economic history, political science, and sociology. He received his PhD in Economics from Northwestern University.
