CEPR is delighted to report that CEPR Research Fellow Dennis Novy has been appointed as Chief Economist and Director of Analysis at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), effective October 1 2025. He will serve as the Chief Economist and Director of Analysis whilst on secondment from the University of Warwick, where he has taught in the economics department since 2006.
As Chief Economist and Director of Analysis, Dennis Novy will lead as economic advisor to ministers, senior officials, embassies, and high commissions, ensuring that FCDO policies and investment decisions are grounded in rigorous research, data, and analysis. He will also work closely with other Chief Economists and Directors of Analysis across Whitehall to deliver international economic insights that inform and shape government decision-making.
Novy has been affiliated with CEPR since 2011 and is currently a Research Fellow in the International Trade and Regional Economics and Political Economy programme areas. His research focuses on international trade, international economics, and macroeconomics. He has held visiting positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, and the University of California, Davis, and served as Impact Director of the CAGE research centre at the University of Warwick from 2022 to 2025. In 2018/19, he was appointed to the UK Council of Economic Advisers by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and in 2013/14, he served as Specialist Adviser to the House of Lords on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
