The Nieuport 27 was almost identical to the standard Nieuport 24 except for a divided-axle landing gear and an internally mounted tailskid. The wheels each had articulated axles fitted with rubber cords. The A.E.F. Air Service purchased 287 Nieuport 27s for use as trainers, Seventy-five had 80 hp Le Rhône engines and 212 had 120 hp Le Rhône motors. Both the 31st and 37th Aero Squadrons had some Nieuport 27s on strength
