This record is in four parts: (1) the Punjab and Sind states, those extinguished 12 Feb 1843 and those acceding to Pakistan shortly after its creation and extinguished 14 Oct 1955; (2) the four Balochistan states, acceding to Pakistan in Mar 1948 and forming the Balochistan States Union, and also extinguished 14 Oct 1955; (3) the Frontier states,originally
under Pakistani suzerainty but not incorporated into Pakistan until 1969; and (4) the Kashmir states (for the native rulers of Jammu and Kashmir see under
India and for Punjab (P縅jab) see under Indian Princely states ). Number of salute guns denoted rank of ruler of the state (hereditary salutes as of 1947 are recorded below). Personal privileges of former rulers were abolished in 1972.
British (and local) political officers (residents, agents, commissioners) usually were in charge of multiple states, they are recorded under the state where they had their office or under one of largest states.
