Latin name: Mergus albellus
Size: Approximately 40cms.
Distribution: Found in the south and east of England.
Months seen: November to April. They spend the rest of the year in Russia and northern Scandinavia.
Food: Eats mostly small fish.
Habitat: Lakes, rivers and freshwater estuaries.
Special features: The female looks very different from the male. She has a reddish-brown head and a more grey coloured body. Both the male and female have a serrated edge to their bills, which helps them to grip small fish.
