Hairy Shieldbugs

Scientific name: Dolycoris baccarum

Size: Approximately 12mm

Distribution: Found in most parts of the UK.

Months seen: April to October

Food: Plant sap

Habitat: Hedgerows, meadows, parks and gardens.

Special features: You need a hand lens to discover where these insects get their name. When you look real close you notice that Hairy Shieldbugs are covered in tiny brown hairs.

The body is often brown or maroon coloured, and scutellum is greenish with a yellow tip. The margin of the body is black and yellow.

Hairy Shieldbugs are sometimes called "Sloe" Shieldbugs.
