What is CLS?

The Center for Language Sciences (CLS) is an organization at the University of Rochester that brings together faculty, postdocs, and graduate students who conduct research on any aspect of human language as a vehicle for active interdisciplinary work.

Graduate Students

The CLS serves as a platform to support interdepartmental PhD students that focus on interdisciplinary work and training. The students have a primary department outside of the center, where they're admitted and affiliated, and a secondary department in another CLS related field.

Our Research

The CLS fosters research and activities that reach across a very broad group of disciplines. Some of its primary disciplines are linguistics, psychology, philosophy, computer science, data science, psychology, cognitive science, music theory, neuroscience, and engineering, covering a wide research focus and range of interests.

The Ivan A. Sag Lectures

The Center for Language Sciences is proud to sponsor the annual Ivan A. Sag Fellowship and Lectures in the Language Sciences. The Sag Fellowship brings a leader in the language sciences to Rochester for an extended visit, during which the Fellow give a series of weekly lectures.
