This website is brought to you in association with the Barrow-in-Furness Branch of the Submariners Association and is the premier UK internet resource for Submariners and anyone interested in Royal Navy Submarines.

Vickers and Barrow are names synonymous with the development of the submarine. Hundreds of submarines covering virtually every class have been built for the Royal Navy and foreign Navies. This site is dedicated to not only to those who have served on Her Majesty's Submarines but also to those employees past and present whose skills and efforts have given pride to the phrase 'Barrow built' and made the name Vickers known and respected throughout the world.

1917 P 552 Laid down
1928 Olympus (N 35) Launched
1936 Spearfish (N 69) Completed
1941 Talisman (N 78) HMS Talisman torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Calitea some 90 miles south of Cape Matapan.
1941 WWII Germany and Italy declare war on the US. The US Congress declares war on Germany and Italy
1941 Torbay (N 79) HMS Torbay sinks the Greek sailing vessel Sofia with gunfire north-west of Suda Bay, Crete.
1941 Truant (N 68) HMS Truant torpedoes and heavily damages the Italian torpedo boat Alcione north of Crete.
1941 O 24 (Dutch) Attacked the German submarine U-652 with three torpedoes about 15 nautical miles west of Ustica Island. No hits were obtained.
1943 Tradewind (P 329) Launched
1946 Alaric (P 441) Completed
1957 Cachalot (S 06) Launched
1962 Talent (P 322) / Zwaardvisch (Dutch) Decommissioned
1964 Tarn (P 336) / Tijjerhai (Dutch) Decommissioned
2010 Astute (S 119) On her first day back at sea after a grounding incident, HMS Astute had to return to port for repairs due to a minor problem with her steam plant.
2020 Anson (S 123) Anson was officially been named in a virtual ceremony (due to the Covid1-19 pandemic) at BAE Systems Barrow-in-Furness shipyard.

The interim sonar prior to 2046 was 2061 not 2062. I worked on 2031z and 2061 between 1985 & 1987 at ARE Portland North. If I looked up from my desk I had a great view of a portion of Portland Harbour and lots of Weymouth Bay.

My uncle, John Leonard Newland went down on the Thorn. My dad was only about 6 when it happened but he still lays a poppy for him every year at the Royal Navy Memorial at Chatham where he is commemorated.

My father Frederick Percival Collins was a leading torpedo man He served on HMS Medway and was in China 1931 I have family photos which are badly water /oil stained due I was told because they were in his wallet when his ship was torpedoed. No mention of this on his service records.
