28 of South Dakota's P500 summits are in the Black Hills.
Another, Bear Butte stands just a few miles away, jutting up out of the
Great Plains just north of I-90 from the main mass of the Black Hills.
Geologically, it is considered a separate formation. To many Indians,
it is regarded as sacred. Part of the area is reserved for
Indians to use for religious purposes. Members of the public are
graciously allowed to go to the summit itself via the state park trail
there.
Harney Peak, Sylvan Peak, Roberts CoHP, and Parker Peak are county high
points. Harding Peak (not peak-shaped at all) and East Short Pine Hills
contend for the HP of Harding County. For this table, the greater
prominence has been awarded to Harding Peak. It is possible, but not
likely, that it could be the other way around.
