-------
Large parts of the California Mountain Atlas are now online; detailing
the 3,800 P500 summits statewide. The atlas is organized by
'lineage cell'; a simple topological concept that divides all of
California into elements derived from the P2000s. Hopefully you
will soon be able to click on the name of a mountain below and drive
down into the detailed list of P500s for that cell.
The elevations below are largely drawn from USGS 7.5' quads.
Investigation by the author indicates that about 25% of the peaks had
understated elevations on the quads, even by the WGS29 vertical datum
standards of the day. Both the author, and Richard Carey have
also investigated the new vertical datum, which raises most summits in
California (and the entire Western US) by 2-10 feet. While this
is not particularly germaine to prominence values, it should be of
interest to the hiker, and I will endeavour to put up some tables with
the new values in short order. Richard Carey's website
peakbagging.com also includes
most of the new values.
The state of California has incredibly varied terrain, and the
following list of summits gives a good representation of North Coast,
Cascades, High Sierra, Trans-Sierra, High Desert, Low Desert, Central
California, Transverse Ranges and even 2 Channel Island
highpoints.
If anything, the High Sierra is comparatively under-represented with
just 28 of the 169 peaks between Tehachapi and Beckwourth Passes.

NOTES
Lat/Longs and other summit details can be found in the California
Mountain Atlas.
[1] Whitney: Investigation by the
author has determined that the
published Mt. Whitney elevation on the provisional USGS 7.5' quad of
14,491' was an USGS error., based on their reading the
wrong
benchmark. The correct elevation at that time should have been
14,495' (14,494' was the widely published elevation), which is the
elevation used for prominence determination. The
newer NAVD88 elevation for Mt. Whitney is 14,505'.
[3] Jacinto: The 7.5' quad elevation of 10,804'
is erroneous. The correct NGVD29 elevation should have been
10,831'. In addition the benchmark rests 8' below the natural
summit for a total elevation of 10,839'. The newer NAVD88
elevation is 10,834'+8'=10,842'.
[22] Double: Double Mtn. is 7981' on the USGS quad, 7989'
(NGVD29) on the benchmark survey. One mile due north is Tehachapi
Mtn., at 7960+40'. Andy Martin has called into question which is
higher, and believes the two are within two feet of each other.
[46] Keynot Peak is definitely higher than Mt. Inyo, although
older maps show Mt. Inyo with 11,107' elevation. According to
sight leveling done by Andy Martin, Mt. Inyo is approximately 46 feet
lower.
[84] BM Spectre: The Highpoint of the Coxcomb Mountains on
the USGS Provisional Quad appears to be BM Aqua at 1346.5m
(4,418'). A visit by highpointers Richard Carey, Adam Helman and
Edward Earl conclusively indicates that nearby BM Spectre is higher
(4480 according to their GPS), even though it does not register on the
topo map. Reference their March 5, 2006
trip report.
[94] Burnt Peak (5,793') is higher than Liebre Mtn.
(5,783'), according to this
definitive
survey by Mssrs. Helman, Earl, and Carey. The elevation of
Burnt Peak is the USGS printed elevation of 5,788' + 5' from BM to
summit.
[111] BM Kettle. The topographic map shows three areas at
7800+40. The first, Kettle Rock has a spot elevation of 7820, the
northernmost is the lookout and presumably the highest point.
Although the topo does not provide an elevation, the benchmark LT0540
provides us with the elevation 7829 (superceded NGVD29).
[169] The topographic map indicates that the highpoint may be Mt.
Hood (2,730) or Bald Mountain (2.5 miles to the east), which has two
enclosed contours of 2,720+40, one with a spot elevation of
2,729'. An accurate survey was conducted by peakbaggers Richard
Carey and Gail Hanna on June 21, 2006, using a tripod, 32x level and
two way radios. By each standing on both peaks separately they
were able to ascertain that Mt. Hood is 6.5' higher ± 6".
This is also supported by field observations by Edward Earl, who
confirms that the 2730' spot elevation is higher than the unnamed
2720+40.
LINKS
Climber.org is a large site
for the Western US with emphasis on the Sierra Nevada. It is the
repository of information for several hiking clubs, and a massive
information resource for peakbagging trip reports.
Peakbagging.com is Richard
Carey's website, full of information about his climbs, club sponsored
peak lists, and GPS and Benchmark info. Richard is a 50 state
completer, CA counties completer, and completer of at least the first
50 on this list.
SIERRA CLUB: ANGELES CHAPTER -- This chapter maintains
authoritive peak lists for hikers in Southern California and the
Southwest. Included on the site is the home page for the
Desert Peaks Section,
the
Sierra Peaks Section,
and the
Hundred Peaks
Section, and peaklists of range highpoints for Arizona and
Nevada. (also on peakbagging.com).
Karpel.org
An amazing photography site of Sierra peaks by Ron Karpel, indexed,
sorted geographically, and cross-referenced to Climber.org information.
Vulgarian Ramblers -
this club website has lots of peaklists. The "official"
California 13,000er list (145 peaks); and DEM generated prominences
galore for the High Sierra.
Also, you have to buy R.J. Secor's
The
High Sierra: Peaks, Passes and Trails, The definitive guide
to the high peaks, missing P values unfortunately.
