Tarcoles
Costa Rica
April 2008
This
Mottled Owl was in Costa Rica between Jaco and Tarcoles. There were a pair owls here. By the sounds, this was the female. I thought it was very interesting how dark this particular owl was. My guess is that this is a young bird with some of its young buffy color remaining and will lighten a bit with age (although will remain much darker than the race of Mottled Owls in Northern Mexico). Both owls were very bold and flew in extreamly close (no more than 15 ft away). Wow, what a beautiful pair of owls.
