Many Asian countries have faced increasing waste generation accompanied with rapid economic growth and this resulted in increasing transboundary movement of recyclable resources. Electrical and electronic waste, i.e. E-waste has been greatly concerned both by researchers and policy makers due to its serious environmental pollution. Many issues have been raised associated with E-waste cycles, like as an inappropriate way of recycling, the increase both in domestic generation and international trade of E-waste, and insufficient disposal facilities or enforcement of regulations.
The promotion of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in each country and the international flow of goods and materials were discussed at the Ministerial Conference on the 3R Initiative that was held in Tokyo in April 2005. The Secretariat of the Basel Convention has launched the project "Environmentally sound management of E-waste in Asia-Pacific" since 2005, encompassing the survey of E-waste Inventory, which Japanese Ministry of the Environment provides with financial and technical support.
NIES has organized two E-waste Workshops. In the past workshops in 2004 and 2005, we have shared the knowledge of current status of E-waste issues at national, regional and international levels, and discussed the future tasks for the promotion of 3Rs of E-waste.
At the Third NIES Workshop on E-waste on November 17-18 in 2006, we will focus on the several important aspects of E-waste such as Toxic and Resource Potentials, Inventories, Reuse and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility). In order to understand the current regional and global issues of E-waste, and to seek appropriate 3R policies, we organize this workshop to exchange the latest information.
The purpose of this workshop is to promote the information exchange between experts, and strive to find out a solution for E-waste issues. We’re looking forward to your participation.
