Research

Our 30 research groups, based around 18 research themes, work together under a common goal of education and surgical intervention.

Teaching

We offer opportunities for research training for clinical and non-clinical graduates and host two taught master's courses. We are also responsible for delivering the surgical training to Medical School undergraduates.

Engagement

We aim to showcase our research, inspire the younger generation, engage with the local community and raise debate on the impact of science on society.

Professor Kokila Lakhoo, Professor of Global Paediatric Surgery at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, has co-authored a new book titled 'Pediatric Surgical Oncology', published by Springer Nature.

Patrick Jull, DPhil Student and Clinical Research Fellow in Transplant Surgery at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, has been awarded a highly competitive One Year Surgical Research Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Oxford-led team awarded significant grant to improve kidney transplant decision-making with AI

Researchers from the Centre for Evidence in Transplantation (CET), led by Associate Professor Simon Knight, have been awarded a prestigious five-year National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Programme Grant for Applied Research (PGfAR). The project will develop and evaluate AI-driven clinical decision support tools to help clinicians make better-informed choices about kidney transplant offers.

Surgery to treat chronic sinus disease more effective than antibiotics

Sinus surgery is more effective than antibiotics in treating chronic rhinosinusitis, according to a major clinical trial conducted by the Surgical Intervention Trials Unit (SITU) at the University of Oxford.
