| Pokagon | 53k | George Steele Gillis was born in Rio, Illinois, 13 April 1873. He served as a volunteer in the Spanish-American War; enlisted for commission in 1899. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army, 02 February 1902, eventually attaining the rank of Major of Infantry, 01 July 1920. Transferred to the Quartermaster Corps
the same date, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, 11 May 1921. He served as chief signal officer of the 79th Division during World War One.
