188k | 22 April 1943: Boston, Mass. - USS Dempsey (DE-267) and USS Wintle (DE-266) were christened on the same day, 22 April 1943, and are both named for Naval officers killed in the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942. The mother of Richard John Dempsey, Mrs. J. A. Dempsey, and the widow of Jack William Wintle christened each respectively. The picture shows Mrs. J. A. Wintle, Ship痴 Sponsor of USS Wintle (DE 25), christening and launching the destroyer escort at Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts, April 22, 1943. Wintle was named after Lieutenant Commander Jack W. Wintle who was killed on board USS San Francisco (CA 38) during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. He also received the Navy Cross.
