27 November 1942: Keel laid by the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Mass.

09 January 1943: Launched and christened, sponsored by Mrs. D. W. Carlson, widow of Chief Machinist Mate Daniel William Carlson

10 May 1943: Commissioned, Lt. H. E. Purdy, USNR, in command

10 December 1945: Decommissioned at San Pedro, Cal. after 2 years and 7 months of service

03 January 1946: Struck from the NVR

25 November 1946: Sold, scrapped

Carlson 0600902	641k	Jay's Dad, John Arthur Leffingwell Jr., joined the Navy on 25 November 1942 in Richmond, Va. After attending "boot camp" at the Norfolk Naval Training Center, he was transferred to USS *Carlson* on 10 May 1943, the day she was commissioned. He served in *Carlson* until 01 November 1945 when he was transferred to the Naval Hospital at Long Beach, Cal. for treatment and discharge as an Electricians Mate 2nd Class. This is a souvenier pen and ink destroyer escort drawing presented to DE crewmembers upon their discharge at war's end. They were sent in bulk to all destroyer escorts and were then usually personalized with either the ships' name or hull number. On this example you can see where USS *Carlson* was written in pencil on the bow banner. If you look at the example on the USS *Seid* (DE 256) page, you'll see where the hull number 256 has been written in the banner.		Jay Leffingwell Richmond, Va.
