Port side view while underway, date and location unknown but note that she only has one forward and one aft AN/SPG-55 radar so this is probably soon after commissioning. There was a shortage of these antennas as the (then) new MK-76 MFCS equipped ships were being built due to a strike at Sperry Rand (the manufacturer) and many of these ships were commissioned with only one radar per launcher until production could catch up with demand. 438k | USS Halsey during completion of her air warfare upgrade at Bath Iron Works. At the time, Halsey still only carried two of the four total AN/SPG-55B missile targeting radars it was designed to carry. Those other two were later installed not long after Halseys return to home port San Diego in 1973. The image appears to have been snapped while Halsey was underway on the Kennebec River possibly at Squirrel Point Light downriver from Bath, Maine in late 1972, possibly while still in control of Bath Iron Works. | Jeff Kettering | |
