Estimation 1 (Extra Credit): a) How many total miles do Americans drive
each year? b) How many gallons of gasoline do we burn up driving
that far? (Use scientific notation. This is an exercise in estimation
(ie: scientific guessing) so round off your answer to the leading number.
Ie: 5,631,429 becomes 6 x 10^6 or 6 million.) Here
are some hints.
Estimation 2 (Extra Credit): a) How many total hours do all Americans
spend in their cars each year? b) How much is that in years? In lifetimes?
Estimation 3 (Extra Credit): a) If the entire population of the world
were crowded together, how much area would we occupy? b) How does
this compare to the size of Virginia Beach? (Hint: you can estimate
the size of Virginia Beach from the time it takes you to drive across it.)
