History
1947
The Association was formed with a membership
of 33 cities under the name of Municipal Waste Management Association.
1956
Name changed to Japan Waste Management
Association (JWMA) and organizational structure enlarged.
1965
Joined INTAPUC (International Association
for Public Cleansing, the ISWA's Predecessor).
1970
Became a national member of the International
Solid Wastes and Public Cleansing Association (ISWA - a group created
from the amalgamation of INTAPUC and IRGRD, International Research
Group on Refuse Disposal).
1976
Recognized as a corporate juridical
person by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
1987
Organized Hazardous Wastes Symposium
in Tokyo jointly with ISWA.
1992
The establishment of National Council
for Promoting Waste Reduction.
1994
The establishment of Central Council
for Handling Designated Hard-To-Properly-Treat Waste.
1996
7th ISWA international congress and
exhibition was held in Yokohama.
III
Objectives
The objectives of the association are to promote efficient waste
management and to contribute to the preservation of residential environment
and the improvement of public hygiene by conducting surveys and research and
managing data essential to the achievement of efficient management and improvements
in technology in the waste management activities of local public bodies.

Organization and Operation
General Assembly
The General Assembly is the highest decision-making
body of the Association and includes all regular and supporting members.
The General Assembly is usually held once each year and deliberates on the Items
stipulated in the Association's articles incorporation.
Executive Board
Executive Board is an executive body comprising
representatives of the regular and supporting members which meets
approximately six
times each year to execute the decisions of the General Assembly, consider
an agenda for the Meeting, enact and abolish regulations, and so on.

municipal waste collection, transportation, treatment and disposal:

and disposal system on municipal solid wastes which can
not be easily treated by municipalities.

Research and development
for product assessment method on difficulties of municipal
solid waste management.

Holding seminars and study groups:

To explore the
efficient implementation and appropriate use of operating
techniques in local public bodies with the aim of resolving
problems presently facing solid waste
treatment.

Presentation of research papers:

To disseminate
the results of research in the field of waste management
carried out by JWMA members and research organizations
in order
to encourage the mutual exchange
of information.

Promotion of international exchange
in the waste management field:

To conduct annual
study tour of solid waste treatment facilities in various
foreign countries and concurrently to participate in the
ISWA conferences.
