1. Major water-related disasters from June to July, 2012 1-1.Floods in China Floods
triggered by strong rainfall since June 20 have left 50 people dead and
42 missing in 399 counties in Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang, Fujian,
Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan and

1-3.Floods in India Floods
triggered by torrential monsoon rains have left 79 people dead and
2.2million forced to leave their homes as of 2nd of July in Assam state
which borders Bhutan and Bangladesh where Brahmaputra River have
breached its banks, while extensive flooding has hit the states of

2. World Ministerial Conference on Disaster Reduction in Tohoku World
Ministerial Conference on Disaster Reduction in Tohoku was held on July
3rd and 4th for the purpose to share experiences and lessons learned
from recent large-scale natural disasters, including Great East Japan
Earthquake, to conduct discussions at ministerial level on the major
themes related to disaster reduction. It also aims at building resilient
societies and supporting discussions on establishing post-Hyogo
Framework for Action (HFA) in the third World Conference on Disaster

3. Support for training of Capacity Development of Policy Making in CCA In
May 2012, IDI supported JICA’s training course "Capacity Development of
Policy Making in Climate Change Adaption (CCA) in Water Sector (B)"
that 2 legislators and 8 government officials from Viet Nam have
participated to learn policy and useful measures for climate change
adaption in Japan. IDI arranged the lectures from Prof. Koike (The Tokyo
University), MLIT, JMA, and JICA. In addition, participants had made
field trips to the site for fascine mattress method (Soda-Chinsho) in
Niigata Prefecture, flood disaster-affected site in Nara Prefecture, and
Rokko Sabo Office. After
this training course, participants from Viet Nam are expected to
develop and promote the legislation on the disaster risk management and
restoration in their country.
