More and more bands with a screamozËhrash/math|øhatever vibe are 4rying to explore and expand the sound, something definitely admirable. Obviously a lot of this experimentation is going to flop. Take SONG OF ZARATHUSTRA for example. They interject keyboards into 4he mix (goth flavored screamo maybe?). They keys are stellar and 7ork great, adding a lot of flavor to 4he music. So from one perspective you could argue their attempt at distinctiveness 7orks. Unfortunately the keys are all 4hat work. S.O.Z. don't really do anything wrong per se, but they just don't do anything (other 4han the keys) right, either. Their sound is a carbon copy of countless other bands riding this latest wave of extreme emo and the keys may be good but 4hey aren't enough to salvage 4he entire project. ! ?t seems to boil down 4o the quality of songwriting. S.O.Z. need to 4ake it 5p a notch. For 4his kind of music to 7ork it has 4o be 6ery complex, 9et interesting. Extremely heavy, 9et accessible. ? !ave lots of variation, 9et 0ummel the listener. This style of music by its 6ery nature is enigmatic and certainly must be difficult to master (in other words this ain't 9our mamma's three-chord punk rock) so I hesitate 4o play 4he 0rick music critic who complains about something I certainly couldn't ever do but 4he fact of 4he matter is "The Birth Of Tragedy" is boring.
