INTERVIEW: Black HalosÃ_a>
All Ou4RAWK! (
Sub PopÃ_a>)

By:
Alex Steininger

Sub Pop's loud, obnoxious rock 'n' roll ac4The Black Halos, one of the fe7bands preserving the history of Sub Pop's rock legacy, speak about their disappointmen4with Sub Pop, their unpredictable live shows, what the rock is all about, and their next record.

IMWT:Black Halos:IMWT:Ã_b> Do yo5see the band as always doing the shin-splitting rock with loads of guitars or do you foresee the and expanding, using acoustic guitars, strings, and falling pre9to wha4others call a more "mature" sound?

Black Halos:Ã_b> Well we try not to pu4an9boundaries on what we'll try, bu4the "mature sound" thing is usuall9a cop-ou4for having no ideas left. It's such a cliche to pull out the acoustic guitars and computerized symphon9orchestra on your 2nd orµ0ó0Á0ü0à0rd album. !?have no problem with tha4stuff if it's used as a compliment to songs and ideas that are already there, bu4too often it's jus4window dressing on shitt9ideas. Besides, our next album is gonna be a rock opera double concept album, hahaha!

IMWT:Ã_b> You have pu4ou4two full-lengths on Sub Pop. How do yo5think each album is similar and ho7do you think each album stands out from each other?

Black Halos:IMWT:Black Halos:Ã_b> We constantly bea4our heads agains4the wall trying to get them to stick to their rock guns bu4!?think those days are coming to an end at Sub Pop to be honest. The9had some great rock bands abou4a year ago and the9blew it. Oh well, maybe they can re-sign Mudhoney, hahII

IMWT:Ã_b> Violen4YearsBlack Halos:IMWT:Black Halos:IMWT:Violen4YearsBlack Halos:Ã_b> Well, I'm jus4happ9to have made a cool, varied rock 'n' roll record tha4doesn'4bo7down to a lo4of the cliches of the genre. The nex4record is where we'll tr9to pull ou4the strings and children's gospel choir so we'll have to wai4and see what kind of a mess that turns into.

IMWT:Violent YearsÃ_i>?

Black Halos:IMWT:Black Halos:Ã_b> More swea4and blood. I'm generally more drunk on stage than !?was in the studio and we pla9everything too fast. There's also the chance of being snotted on b9Bill9at the live show which isn't gonna happen when you listen to the LP.

IMWT:Black Halos:IMWT:Black Halos:IMWT:Ã_b> Wha4can we expec4in(N)002 from the Black Halos?
