Aiken played a ladle as a musical instrument, and his clothing was adorned with various food objects. Versions of the song have also been collected in North America. The song may originally derive from a Jacobite song (“Will ye go to Sherrifmuir?) from the early 18^th century, which has a burden of ‘Aikendrum, aikendrum?. Yet another early version tells of a recruit named Aikendrum, who adorns himself with various food objects. Carlin (Gow Collection), 1986; No. 583. The tune was known, as are many Scots tunes, in County Donegal, Ireland, as evidenced by the old diary entry of a fiddler named William Allingham, employed as a customs officer but whose vocation was traditional music. He visited a poor fiddler named Tom Read in the (probably Ballyshannon) poorhouse who played for him both “Ain Kind Dearie? and “Paudeen O Rafferty? in November of 1847, the time of the famine. Allingham gave George Petrie several tunes which appear in the latter’s collection of Irish music. Carlin (The Gow Collection), 1986; No. 408. Gow (Complete Repository), Part 3, 1806; pg. 24. A "trowie," or fairy, tune, which tradition holds was heard by a Cunningsburgh carptenter in about 1790, as he was coming home one night after celebrating the completion of a sixareen, or small fishing boat. Hearing sounds emanating from a green mound, the man crept up to it and through a crack in the rock in the moonlight was amazed to spy trowie dancers cavorting to the melody. "Being a noted fiddler, he managed to take down the tune in sol‑fa, and when he got gome he played it on his fiddle" (Anderson & Georgeson). Source for notated version: J. AKEROYDE’S PAD .English. The tune appears in the 11^th edition of Playford’s English Dancing Master (1701), marking the taking over of the series by Henry Playford from John Playford.

AKSLA-BITEN (Shoulder Bite). Norwegian, Lydarslatter. A lydarslatter is a listening piece for the hardanger fiddle. The title is said to have derived from the idiosyncratic habits of one Elling Sjor, a lover of Harding fiddling, which so moved him that he would sit as close as possible to the performer with his head resting of the fiddler's left shoulder. During a famous rendition of this piece by the fiddler Nilson Bolko, he was unable to restrain himself during certain passages and actually dug his teeth into Bolko's shoulder (Hopkins, 1986).

It was predicted (in the Chilton ?County {Ala.} News of June 1st, 1922) to "vie with the latest jazz nerve wreckers for first place" at a Chilton County convention (Cauthen, 1990). ALABAMA JUBILEE . Old‑Time, Jazz tune. The Skillet Lickers (in the configuration of Gid Tanner and Clayton McMichen on fiddles, Riley Pucket on guitar and vocals, and Fate Norris on banjo) recorded the song in Atlanta on April 17^th, 1926, one of eight sides for Columbia records. Wayne W. Daniel (in his book Pickin? on Peachtree: A History of Country Music in Atlanta, Georgia, 1990) opines: “The output from this historic recording session makes for a rather unimpressive list of what even there were long-familiar tunes and songs: “Hand Me Down My Walking Cane,? “Bully of the Town,? “Pass Around the Bottle and We’ll All Take a Drink,? “Alabama Jubilee,? “Watermelon on the Vine,? “Don’t You Hear Jerusalem Moan,? “Ya Gotta Quit Kickin? My Dog Aroun?,? and “Turkey in the Straw.”” The melody was also recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, for Victor Records by fiddler Bill Helms of Thomastown, a village south of the city. Helms was backed on the recordings by Grady Owens (fiddle), John Hogan (banjo, guitar) and Ty Cobb Hogan (guitar). Later, “in 1931, Helms recorded for Columbia with Riley Puckett and Gid Tanner as the Home Town Boys? (Wayne W. Daniel, Pickin? on Peachtree, 1990, pg. 81). Gennett 7240 (78 RPM), 1930, Tweedy Brothers (W.Va. brother band, Harry, George, and Charles, who played twin fiddles and piano).

ALABAMA TRAVELLER . Old-Time. The tune is mentioned in a period news account as having been played at the 1922 Georgia Old Time Fiddlers' Association annual state championship held in Atlanta. The title is perhaps a substitution for "Arkansas Traveller" or may be a distint tune.

The Roane County Ramblers fiddler Jimmy McCarroll called the tune “Georgia Fox Trot,? but the tune was issued by Columbia under the ?Alabama? title, for some reason. Kerry Blech traces modern popularity of the tune to Major Contay and the Canebreak Rattlers who played the tune a lot in the 1970’s, and to Blech’s own Ohio band, the Rhythm Gorrillas, in the 1980’s. Joyce (1873) relates this air is “a kind of mock lament uttered by the person from whom the little bag was stolen,? and goes on to say that it would be hard to find a song more universally known in the Munster of his era than this. The whimsical song answers the question posed by one person with an enumeration of all that was in the precious bag—a lot of fine clothes—meal and flour—tow or three potatoes—honey, wax and cheese—butter and apples—a flitch of bacon—Paddy’s stockings, Shaneen’s brogues, etc.? Bayard identifies this tune as the Irish variant of the tune known in America as "Black‑Eyed Susie" (AKA and see), and also thinks the tune is related to "Ally Crocker" in Cole’s 1000 (pg. 8) and "Stick the Minister [1]" in Roche. Joyce notes that although a distinct melody, it bears some resemblance to ?Fag-a-ballagh,? the air of Thomas Moore’s song “To ladies’eyes a round, boys.? Howe (1,000 Jigs and Reels), c. 1867; pg. 22. ALBERT FARMER’S BONFIRE TUNE . English, Polka or Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning. AABB?. According to Ken Stubbs, Albert Farmer was born in 1893, lived all his life in Lingfield, Surrey. He was a butcher before World War I, but when he returned home from service he found the shop where he worked had been demolished and another built in its place. As work was scarce he found it where he could and subsequently worked in building construction, maintenance and as a painter and decorator. Largely self-taught, he learned to play the concertina and melodeon, and with a drum set he started a one-mand band. He also played the harmonica and tambourine together. Farmer was known to accompany carol singers on their rounds and devoted much time to developing the East Grinstead Olde Tyme dancing Club.

Farmer’s home town of Lingfield had a bonfire tradition, much in the tradition of neighboring Sussex. English bonfires were a common form of celebration attached to many calendar customs such as November the 5^th, Queen Elizabenth I’s accession, New Year and midsummer, according to Simpson & Roud (English Folklore, 2000). As the authors say, “it has taken very little persuasion to get English people to make a bonfire.? In former times they took an anti-papal character, with pope and devil effigies being burned in the conflagration, and they were encouraged, for example, in the time of Henry VIII as a way of communicating to the populace their good fortune in being delivered from the clutches of the Roman church. There is no evidence that bonfires were connected with Celtic tradition, nor that they were survivals of pagan custom, note Simpson & Roud.

From the contradance book (tunes with dance instructions) of Robert Daubat (who styled himself Robert d’Aubat de Saint-Flour), born in Saint-Flour, Cantal, France, in 1714, dying in Gent, Belgium, in 1782. According to Belgian fiddler Luc De Cat, at the time of the publication of his collection (1757) Daubat was a dancing master in Gent and taught at several schools and theaters.? He also was the leader of a choir and was a violin player in a theater. Mr. De Cat identifies a list of subscribers of the original publication, numbering 132 individuals, of the higher level of society and the nobility, but also including musicians and dance-masters (including the ballet-master from the Italian opera in London). Many of the tunes are written with parts for various instruments, and include a numbered bass. Daubat (Cent Contredanses en Rond), 1757; No. 44.

A very popular four-part quick march in both Britain and in America in the late 18^th and 19^th centuries. The tune appears as “The Albany Quick March? in the Thomas Hammersley (London) manuscript of 1790, although its first printing appears in Captain Robert Hinde’s Second Collection of Quick Marches with Basses, published in London in 1772, where it is ladled simply “Quickmarch #18.? London publishers Straight and Skillern included it in their Two Hundred & Four Favourite Country Dances vol. 1 (1775), and Skillern printed it again in both his Compleat Collection of Two Hundred and Four Reels and Country Dances (1780) and Compleat Instructions for the Fife (1780). Longman & Broderip used the melody in their Entire New and Compleat Instructions for the Fife (London, 1780), repeated by Clementi, Muzio & Co. (London) in 1815 in a volume of exactly the same title. It appears in the music manuscript of William Clarke (Lincoln) of 1770. The Durham manuscript as “Albania Quick March,? as does Daniel Henry Huntington’s “Preceptor for the Flute,? a manuscript copybook from Onondaga, New York, 1817. American fluter Henry Beck included it in his commonplace book of 1786, as did John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn., 1788). Lancaster, Pa., flute player John Hoff (1776-1818) noted it into his copybook, with the title “Albinea 10 or French Country Dance.? ALDRIDGE'S HORNPIPE [1] . Scottish, Hornpipe. A Major (Cole, Kerr): B Flat Major (Atholl). Standard tuning. AABB (Cole, Emmerson): AA'BB (Kerr). Emmerson (1971) explains that toward the end of the 18th century a genre of tunes gained popularity as vehicles for stage hornpipes "performed by the numerous ent'racte dancers then so much in fashion."? The name of the hornpipe derives in all probability from the dancer for whom it was composed, Robert Aldridge (b.c. 1738-1793), whom Chambers describes as 'a famous pantomimist and dancing master'. A doggerel poem in Gentleman's Magazine (January, 1772) describes him as "a dancer of ease." The Irish-born Aldridge was a familiar performer in the theaters of London and Dublin in the 1760's and 1770's, and even seems to have resided in Edinburgh at the end of the 1770's where he is recorded to have founded the Boar Club with the elder Schetky (one of the popular gentlemen’s clubs, where porcine terminology and nicknames were used in honor of the landlord, Mr. Hogg). However long he lived in the Scottish city, Aldridge died in Edinburgh in 1793. Standard tuning. AABB (Allan, O’Neill, Sing Out): AA’BB? (Moylan). The tune appears as “Byrne’s Hornpipe? in the Feis Ceoil Collection of Traditional Irish Music (1914). Curiously, O’Neill printed it in 1903 in his Music of Ireland, but omitted it from his 1907 Dance Music of Ireland. An early version of the hornpipe can be found in the music manuscript copybook of fiddler John Burks under the title ?Prunoble’s Hornpipe.? Nothing is know of Burks, but he may have been from the north of England. ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND . American. A tin‑pan‑alley tune by Irving Berlin (popularized on the variety stage by Emma Carus) played by Arizona fiddler Kenner C. Kartchner for dances sometime after 1911, when the tune was first published. As many have pointed out, the tune itself is not in real ragtime. The Alexander of the title is reportedly one Jack Alexander, a coronet-playing bandleader who lived until 1958 (James J. Fuld, The Book of World Famous Music, 1971).

ALHAMBRA , THE. American, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning. AB. The title probably refers not to the famous Moorish palace in Spain but to one of the several theatres and music-halls named The Alhambra, in imitation of the exotic nature of the original. London and Edinburgh, for example, had Alhambra Theatres, decorated in a quasi-oriental style, and New York had its Alhambra Theatre at 124-125 West Twenty-seventh Street.? The later was investigated by the conservative Society for the Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency in the early 1880’s, as part of a campaign to clean up the numerous variety houses and concert saloons of the city which ran the gamut from the legitimate to the decidedly seedy and sometimes criminal. The Alhambra, remarks Brooks McNamara in his book The New York Concert Saloon: the Devil’s Own Nights (2002, Cambridge Univ. Press), featured “unremarkable attractions? which the Society’s monitor recorded as:

Needing a drink by this time, I darted into Theiss’s Alhambra Music Hall across

the street. The Alhambra definitely stood outside the pale of respectability which

Blank’s straddled. It was a long room, and the entertainment, aside from a large

and competent orchestra, consisted entirely of feminine conversation. It usually

proved expensive. Wine was the featured beverage, beer drinkers being made to

feel rather non grata. The dim lights and the Vienna waltzes induced a mood of

romance to which New Yorkers, familiar with the faces of the ladies working the

spot, were inured, but which had great effect upon the visitors from out of town.

As a consequence, Theiss’s was an especially good plug. It meant a lot to have our

numbers carried out to the sticks in the subconciousness of a tipsy country cousin.

The train of association whereby “Annie Rooney? eventually appeared on the piano

in a small town banker’s house would have shocked many a fine community.
