Water security – its availability, quality, management and protection – has become a critical issue in human development and environmental and economic sustainability, particularly in light of global population growth. The IAEA approaches this challenge through science-based isotope hydrology methodologies and technical training.

Access to reliable and safe drinking water is a major factor in meeting the needs of a growing population and to maintain human health. It is also crucial for sustainable food and energy production, industry and environmental protection. Nuclear isotopic techniques provide key information about water sources and the human impact on the climate.

The IAEA promotes the application of nuclear techniques to all aspects of freshwater resource assessments and water management and protection. It also provides training in isotope hydrology data analysis and measurement methods, as well as expert services and analyses.
