Description

Given the rapid advancements in uncrewed systems (UXS), including uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), and their growing prevalence, there's a pressing need for research into their nuclear security implications. This urgency is underscored by current events, highlighting the potential for overlooked vulnerabilities and benefits that could impact the security of nuclear facilities and the detection of nuclear material outside regulatory control.
This project proposes a coordinated effort to amalgamate individual studies, offering actionable insights and strategies to fortify global nuclear security frameworks. By delving into the complex interplay between uncrewed systems and nuclear security, the initiative aims to spearhead international collaboration, policy formulation, risk evaluation, and strategy development.
Such comprehensive analysis is vital for enhancing the global nuclear environment's safety and security, ensuring readiness against the evolving technological and threat landscape.

Objectives

The CRP seeks to enhance global efforts to address the evolving threats posed by and to realize the operational benefits presented by both UAVs and the broader categories of uncrewed systems in the context of nuclear security. This involves a multifaceted approach to advance technology and develop an associated framework that addresses guidelines; risk assessment methods; deterrence, detection, and response strategies; and policy and regulatory issues. Results will form the basis of guidance for Member States to enhance their nuclear security regimes, and for the Agency to facilitate international cooperation to address the nuclear security implications of uncrewed aerial, ground, and marine systems.
