Many complex science and engineering applications can be formulated as optimization problems, constrained by partial differential equations (PDEs), that involve both continuous and integer variables. Applications include the remediation of contaminated sites, oil recovery, the design of ultra-efficient solar cells, and disaster recovery planning. We describe some of these applications, and investigate the use of existing and new solution techniques.
