Where a non-examination item of assessment (including essays, assignments, take-home tests, etc) is not submitted by the due date and time, a penalty will be levied at the rate of 10% of the marks available for the assessment item per day that the assessment is overdue.
Example: Where a piece of assessment is due at 4pm on Monday, assessment submitted after 4pm Monday but before 4pm on Tuesday will receive a 10% penalty.
Assessment submitted more than 5 days after the due date and time will receive zero marks.
Example: Where a piece of assessment is due at 4pm on the 10th, any work submitted after 4pm on the 15th will receive zero marks.
If the 5th day following the due date is a Saturday or a Sunday, assessment will be accepted until 9am on the following Monday.
Example: A piece of assessment is due at 4pm on Monday the 9th. In the normal course of events, to receive any marks, a student must submit their assessment by 4pm on Saturday the 14th (the 5th day following the due date) at the latest. As the 5th day is a Saturday, the student may submit anytime up to 9am on Monday the 16th.
No extension granted may exceed 14 days.
For full details, students should refer to the Law School's policy on Late Submission of Assessment . Except in exceptional circumstances, extensions for assessment will only be considered in respect of a certified medical condition. Applications for extension shall be made by lodging the Application for Extension form (and supporting documentation) at the Law School Office by the due date for assessment unless the exceptional circumstance or medical condition is such that the student cannot reasonably be expected to have applied prior to the due date.
Students who are granted an extension beyond the due date for assessment items must submit their assessment to the Law School Office, NOT the BEL Faculty Collaborative Learning Centre.
The LAWS5228 tutorials will be used to further your understanding of the course materials by providing you with an opportunity to debate and role play the consequences of various privacy law related incidents. Your technology will be welcome during tutorials but you will also be expected to use and develop your oral skills.
The tutorials are important because the tutorial topics are linked to the other forms of assessment on the course. Preparation for and participation in the tutorials will therefore assist you to address the other forms of assessment. You will be required to: work in small groups to discuss the issues arising from tutorial questions; formulate answers to tutorial questions; and participate in group and individual discussions.
You will be asked to provide a 1-2 page, bullet point, skeleton answer to each of the five tutorial topics. The purpose of the skeleton answer is threefold: (1) To assist you to structure your work in preparation for further course assessment on LAWS5228; (2) to assist your preparation for tutorials; and thus (3) to encourage active group participation by all individuals. You should print out your tutorial preparation answer and bring it along to the tutorial for marking. A total of 5 marks - 1 mark for each tutorial preparation answer - will be awarded.
You will also receive 1 mark for attending and participating in the tutorial. The participation mark is designed as an incentive to encourage active engagement and participation in the tutorials. You should also consider the tutorials as your opportunity for formative, as well as summative feedback, throughout the course. Participation can include: contributions to group discussions, formulation of group and individual responses to questions and active engagement in the tutorial. If you do not complete and submit your tutorial preparation work for marking at the tutorial, you will not be entitled to a participation mark. You can still attend the tutorial but you will not receive any marks for doing so.
If you are unable to attend a tutorial due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. illness or work) you can either: (1) email your tutorial preparation work to me and attend a different tutorial on that topic to receive 2 marks or (2) email your tutorial preparation work to me and not attend a tutorial to receive 1 mark. You must email your tutorial preparation work to me before your designated tutorial if you want your work to be considered for marking due to extenuating circumstances.
Accordingly, a total of 10 marks will be awarded for Tutorial Preparation & Participation Assessment.
