NGN Norway and the NGN Event at Trondheim Symposium May 2025

Last year, in the summer of 2024, the new NGN Norway Board met for the first time at the Paris Session. There has been an NGN board in Norway for a long time, but after a period of low activity, CIGRE Norway decided to initiate a new board. We were fortunate to kick-off our introduction to CIGRE at the 2024 Paris Session. We were truly in awe when walking into the Palais des Congrès for the first time, seeing the size of the location and the enormous number of enthusiastic colleagues from all over the world.

Interference effects between HVDC circuits and nearby metallic infrastructure

To achieve the goal of climate neutrality, the transport routes for renewable energy must continue to be expanded. The energy transmission will primarily be realized in the form of HVDC systems, allowing for nearly loss-free transmission over long distances. Due to the densely built infrastructures within the transport routes, interference between HVDC transmission systems and parallel metallic infrastructures like buried pipelines is unavoidable.

The growing electrification of demand in the energy transition is driving the expansion of power electronics interfaced demand, and in particular new types of loads such as electrolysers, mega-chargers for electric vehicles and large data centres. These installations are increasingly influencing the behaviour and dynamics of the overall power system and pose unprecedented challenges to the grid. Today, the planning, connection, operational impact and technical behaviour of these large-scale demand facilities remain poorly scrutinised, as evidenced by recent experiences and perturbations in system operation in some jurisdictions.

Network Protection in a changing system

he increasing number of Renewable Energy Resources (RES), and other installations, like energy storage, connected via converters, has given raise to concerns about the performance of the different protection and automation functions. Installations connected to the electric network with power electronic based converters are also known as Inverter Based Resources (IBR).
