  Coloured sand

  A range of coloured sand products has been recalled over concerns about asbestos contamination.

  The ACCC issued a national recall notice for several coloured sand products after laboratory testing detected traces of chrysotile asbestos — a type of naturally occurring asbestos.

  The ACCC pointed out that the detected substance is not respirable asbestos. The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur in its current state, unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising.

  Australia has just seen its first treaty signed: between Victorian First Nations people and the state government.

  Australia is the only developed country colonised by the British to have never signed a formal treaty.

  US shutdown

  The US Senate has voted to end the longest government shutdown in the country's history.

  The shutdown lasted 40 days, sidelining federal workers, delaying food aid and disrupting air travel.

  The amended bill will go back to the House of Representatives for approval.
