--1927-1934: university demonstrator, Clare College
--1930: publishes his Plant Biology
--1931-1961: editor of The New Phytologist
--1932: made honorary secretary of the British Ecological Society; establishes
the Fenland Research Committee
--1934-1948: university lecturer, Clare College
--1942-1943: president, British Ecological Society
--1945: made a fellow of the Royal Society of London (council member 1957-1959)
--1948-1956: editor of the Journal of Ecology
--1948-1960: reader, Clare College
--1948-1966: first director of the sub-department of Quaternary Research
at the Cambridge Botany School
--1951: awarded the Prestwich medal of the Geological Society of London
