[Logic] Power: On or Off ?

Jim:
I'm sure this is one of those topics that goes on forever, with ever
differing opinions.
I have a handful of rigs and related equipment around the place and about 6
computers. Most of the solid state equipment is always powered up, altho the
rigs will be shut down during severe electrical storms (despite good
grounding and surge suppression on AC and feedlines). The computers are all
on surge protected UPS's and are occasionally shut down.
The one downside I have observed is what I consider premature hard drive
and power supply (fan?) failure...I have had several HD's and PS's operating
under these
conditions fail somewhere in the 24-36 month timeframe.. Not sure what the
spec'd MTBF is on
these components, but my failure history didn't "feel" right. I also think
the manufacturers build them to be reliable and competitive for the
marketplace, not for the continuous duty user.
I still operate the equipment as described, but am more religious about
making redundant backups
of data.
