Are you using the tarball from lua.org?
	http://www.lua.org/ftp/lua-5.1.1.tar.gz

Ah, no, that version works great in every way.

I downloaded: lua5_1_1_Sources.tar from http://luabinaries.luaforge.net/download.html, which compared with the above is seriously broken.
