I worked for a company that used a "Laptop Lojack" service, which was based off IP. It would geolocate based on IP and tell you where stolen laptops were. They're work with the police to recover stolen laptops: I think we had about a 50% success rate with them. I remember one ending up in the Dominican Republic! The other nice functionality was the ability to remote wipe. IIRC, it was about 100ドル per unit. If you're storing very sensitive data, it is a no brainer.
