I don't know if this will apply, but I'll throw it out there FWIW... I had a problem with a blank X screen when I upgraded a PCLinux box. My eventual solution is here: http://lists.netisland.net/archives/plug/plug-2009-11/msg00002.html It's different, as it was an upgrade, and not a fresh install, but you can review that thread if you think it has any value...
