Problem Solved.... Ironically it turns out to be just the thing you were talking about, not putting the excplicit 'php' in the block. Once I did that it worked fine. <?php phpinfo(); ?> worked fine. While <? phpinfo(); ?> did not So I obviously do not have the shortcut method defined and from what I am hearing in this thread it might be good to not use the short method anyhow.
