I have had a similar experience with my Debian laptop and my Powerbook.
Do you have 'resolver' installed? Have you taken a look at
/etc/resolv.conf? Mine gets dynamically created by 'resolver' and it puts
in a line like:
 domain walngs01.pa.comcast.net
Which is followed by my nameserver lines. I have replaced this line with
'search nameserver' and the tremendous lag and timeouts stop. That is
until I reboot and 'resolver' kicks in again.
