So can someone recommend an article/message/BBS package? My biggest
requirement is that it be free (because we're all broke) and not too

Ron. Take a look at b2 or wordpress. Though I keep trying out other 
stuff these two blog centric titles are web standards compliant and can 
be heavily customized when you are ready to slice some code. Yes they 
are open source.
