	 i said no, did my lilo and the system is running fine.

 why can't I use --initrd

 I also spent time looking at debian mailing lists... I could not find
 a section on make-kpkg.

Why are you including initrd in a kernel that is not an installation 
kernel? Initrd is primarilly for setting up a ram based file system 
that provides the minimum to boot and install a Linux system.
Of course there are other uses for initrd and cramfs like running a 
system like knoppix off of a compressed file system on a cdrom. In this 
instance, the system runs as slow as the cdrom drive.
