Now that you mention it, I'm taking another look at /etc/nsswitch.conf. 
I thought nsswitch only worked with specific data sources. We'll see.
The rsync/ssh method is working well for "hosts", "resolv.conf", 
"auto.master", "auto.auto", and "printcap.local". Now to get "passwd", 
"shadow", "group", and "gshadow" to cooperate. Another stumbling point 
are two computers which don't support ssh, yet.
Is there a reasonable way to get RedHat 6.2 to run ssh without upgrading 
the entire distro?!
