Note the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt (this is from the devices.txt for 2.4.18): block SCSI CD-ROM devices 0 = /dev/sr0 First SCSI CD-ROM 1 = /dev/sr1 Second SCSI CD-ROM ... The prefix /dev/scd instead of /dev/sr has been used as well, and might make more sense. ... It is recommended that these links exist on all systems: ... /dev/scd? sr? hard Alternate SCSI CD-ROM name Note also this paragraph, from the same file: For SCSI devices, /dev/tape and /dev/cdrom should point to the ``cooked'' devices (/dev/st* and /dev/sr*, respectively), whereas /dev/cdwriter and /dev/scanner should point to the appropriate generic SCSI devices (/dev/sg*).
