According to the users manual for LILO page 44 LI The first stage of the boot loader was able to load the second stage bool loader, but has failed to execute it. When you ran lilo did you get the messages that linux and what ever were loaded ok like: Added Linux * Added Linux-old Added dos If you didn't then your /etc/lilo.conf file must be wrong. I use symlinks in the root directory pointing to the / boot directory. lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Dec 9 05:30 /vmlinuz -> boot/bzImage-2.3.29 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Dec 9 05:30 /vmlinuz.old -> boot/bzImage-2.2.13 This is a way that you can update your kernel without editing the lilo configuration file.
