I've had no problems getting Slackware to install on a 486 with 8M ram,
according to Installation-HOWTO "Technically, Linux will run with only 2
meg, but most installations and software require 4. The more memory you
have, the happier you'll be. I suggest 8 or 16 megabytes if you're
planning to use X-Windows." 
The howto is kinda old tho (Nov. 1998), so maybe Debian 2.0's installation
requires more..
