But the top guns in the custom-Linux-box business are generally conceded to be VA Research, www.varesearch.com. Linus Torvalds's personal machine is a VA Research workstation. I use a VAR box they gave me about six months ago and it has been nothing but a pleasure -- they build high-quality hardware and test it to a fare-thee-well before shipping. I like the company a lot; they have a great attitude and they work hard at supporting the Linux community (among other things, VAR actually hosts the Debian site and is a major Slashdot sponsor.) Obligatory disclaimer: I have accepted a directorship on VAR's board -- but only after spending a week there, helping them build computers and getting to know their people. I have high standards for who I'll let use my name. VAR meets them all.
