The world needs water. Hear what it has to say

"We know that water security is literally a matter of life and death."Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment and Water, Australia

"Most people will experience the impact of climate change through water. 2 Billion People already lack access to safely managed drinking water, and this problem is only going to get worse due to the climate crisis. The world is changing."Secretary John F. Kerry, United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Change

"Each generation has its own challenges, but no generation has faced such an urgent and formidable challenge as climate change and global warming....This is the battle for our lifetime."Sebastian Piñera, Former Chilean President

We believe in impactful growth. Desalination and Reuse technologies have been changing drastically over the last fifty-few years, and we want to showcase the instrumental role of IDRA and its members in driving this development. Explore the history of change here

Impact in numbers created through Desalination and Water Reuse

The intensification of droughts due to climate change is evident. Water reuse presents a viable solution to address escalating water demands. It facilitates the creation of a sustainable and dependable water supply and the opportunity to replenish natural resources. Additionally there exist approximately 22,000 desalination plants worldwide, catering to the clean drinking water requirements of over 300 million individuals.

The IDRA conducted a survey to provide ECHA information on the current use of PVDF-based membranes (MF/UF) in water treatment systems. The survey pertained to water treatment systems in the European Community: EU countries.

The IDRA strongly encouraged end-users/operators to complete the survey to support ECHA decision-making.

ECHA (European Chemicals Agency, an agency of the EU that implements the regulation of chemicals to protect health and the environment) is currently soliciting public consultation on the restriction of around 10,000 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs).

More detailed information about the restriction proposal of PFAS in the EU can be located at https://www.echa.europa.eu.

The IDRA Survey results have been gathered and sent to ECHA. The IDRA’s conclusive report is available for viewing here.

IDRA World Congress 2024: Addressing Water Scarcity

The IDRA World Congress 2024, hosted by the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi, will be held from December 8 to 12, 2024, at the ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi. It is a premier event focusing on desalination and water reuse technologies as solutions to address global water scarcity and climate change’s impact on natural water resources. The event will bring together experts from the water reuse, desalination, and renewable energy sectors for a week of knowledge-sharing and business development. Registration is open, and interested attendees can register at wc.idadesal.org

Enjoy the Summer-Fall 2024 edition of IDRA Global Connections Magazine! This issue places a special emphasis on innovation in reverse osmosis membranes and advanced brine management methods. The articles reflect a firm commitment to developing solutions that not only ensure water supply but also protect our natural resources.

"All people are entitled to water and sanitation without discrimination. The IDRA is here today because we consider this statement finite and imperative. Through desalination and water reuse technology, we pursue our mission in bridging the gap between the demand and supply of fresh water around the world."

Fady Juez
IDRA President

"We are committed to building an expanded IDRA community that embraces all aspects of planning and satisfying global water needs and promoting communication within that expanded community. Our vision is an IDRA community that includes not only technology providers, but also government policy-makers, technology users, the international finance community, global think tanks, and NGOs."

Shannon McCarthy
IDRA Secretary General

“The vital solutions desalination and water reuse technologies and systems provide to offset water scarcity continue to grow each year, as both contribute to meeting clean water demands for municipal, industrial, and agricultural needs. IDRA leads a noble mission to promote these solutions and engage with all stakeholders around the globe.”

Carlos Cosín
Former IDRA President

"Each of us has favorite papers, presentations, books and patents (not necessarily our own!) which we believe influenced the way desalination was understood and advanced over the years."

Dr. Jim Birkett
IDRA Honorary Council Member and Former IDRA President

"IDRA, since its inception, has become the godparent of the desalination and water reuse industry. The membership mix of engineers, researchers, water companies, end users, developers, contractors, legal and financial institutions has created the necessary alliance, to help achieve the goals of water sufficiency, efficiency and sustainability."

Ghassan Ejjeh
IDRA Honorary Council Member and Former IDRA President

"The role of IDRA, its directors and members has been of the utmost importance to let the world know about the importance and progress of water desalination and reuse technology to make water available at a low cost, in places where development is seriously restricted by the lack of water."

José Antonio Medina
IDRA Honorary Council Member and Former IDRA President

"Desalination and water reuse have become the staple of countries in need of new water sources and along the way has spawned many corporations, both big and small who supply myriads of products for this industry. IDRA has provided constant leadership throughout its history guiding the present and future role of desalination."

David Furukawa
IDRA Honorary Council Member and Former IDRA President

"In recent years, desalination has become a mainstream water supply alternative in a world of increasing water stress. It is no longer the last- remedy expensive technology used by those countries that can afford it as was the case at the beginning of my career in this field. The real potential of reuse is also finally being fully recognized."

Dr. Emilio Gabbrielli
IDRA Honorary Council Member and Former IDRA President
