Thanks Geoff
I am sure many polychaete folk the world over will know Roger or remember
meeting him at the various Polychaete Conferences he attended. I attach
photos from Angers (IPC4, 1992) and Portland (IPC9, 2007).
Roger was a great friend, who enriched the lives of others. He was highly
intelligent, author of hundreds of papers and articles, an insightful and
helpful editor, a master at completing cryptic crossword puzzles, and of
international class at Bridge. At the same time, he was down-to-earth,
extremely sociable, generous, and fun to be around. I will miss him so
much, whether at conferences, on Porcupine Council, at the Linnean
Society, on fieldwork, discussing animals and taxonomic problems, or music
or books or just having a laugh over a pint (or more) of ale in some
hostelry or other wherever.
Roger was interested in many marine groups and one of the most universally
knowledgeable marine biologists you could meet. Although he did work on
polychaetes, he specialised in the study of pycnoginids and tanaids.
It is little over a year since Roger was diagnosed with Motor Neurone
Disease and the progress of the illness was relentless and devastating. A
Zootaxa special volume of papers in his honour is in progress and we are
all sad that he did not see this in print.
Roger¹s funeral service will be held at 1 o¹clock on Thursday 12th March
2015 at South Downs Natural Burial Site. I attach details of the
arrangements to celebrate his life for those who may not have heard via
other routes ...
Andy
